An IPTV box — also called an IPTV set-top box, Android TV box or media streamer — is a small device that you connect to your TV and that lets you receive IPTV channels via your internet connection. Think of it as a replacement for the Ziggo or KPN decoder, but for IPTV. You plug it into your television’s HDMI port, connect it to your wifi or an ethernet cable, install an IPTV app, and start watching.
But which box should you buy? There are dozens of options, from €30 to €200, and the differences in quality are enormous. In this buying guide I compare the seven most popular and reliable IPTV boxes you can buy in the Netherlands. I tell you exactly which box suits which type of user, where you can order them, and which ones to avoid.

Not necessarily. If you have a Samsung or LG Smart TV from 2017 or newer, you can install an IPTV app directly on your TV — without extra hardware. Apps such as Smart IPTV, Flix IPTV and SET IPTV are available in the app stores of Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS).

Who it’s for: Budget-conscious viewers who only want HD. No 4K support, but for standard IPTV in 1080p this thing does exactly what it needs to do. TiviMate and IPTV Smarters run smoothly. The remote has no TV controls (volume, on/off) — for that you need the more expensive version.

Who it’s for: The best choice for 90% of IPTV users. Powerful enough for 4K streams, Wi-Fi 6 for a stable connection, and a fine remote with TV controls. TiviMate runs flawlessly on it with 2 GB RAM. This is the device I use myself every day in the living room, for fourteen months now without any problems.

Who it’s for: If you want a little more speed than the regular 4K Stick and have a router that supports Wi-Fi 6E. The extra 8 GB of storage is handy if you install several apps. In practice I barely notice a difference from the regular 4K Stick for pure IPTV use, but the faster processor saves a few seconds when starting up and switching between apps.

Who it’s for: Anyone who prefers the Google TV interface over Amazon’s Fire OS. The Xiaomi Stick runs “pure” Android TV, which means you can install TiviMate and all other IPTV apps directly from the Google Play Store without sideloading. A fine alternative to the Fire TV Stick 4K, although in my experience the Wi-Fi is slightly less stable.

Who it’s for: People who want a traditional set-top box experience without Android. Infomir’s MAG boxes are plug-and-play: you enter your portal URL and you’re done. No app installation, no sideloading, no Google account. The downsides: you cannot install other apps (no Netflix, no YouTube unless via the portal) and you depend on the portal interface. Popular with people who already have experience with IPTV via MAG devices.

Who it’s for: Serious IPTV users who want the very best software experience. The Formuler Z11 Pro comes with MyTVOnline 3, its own IPTV app that many consider the best in the world. The EPG is beautiful, zapping is lightning fast, and you can use several IPTV services side by side. With 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage, this box runs everything you throw at it. You notice the difference from a Fire TV Stick straight away: faster, smoother, and the remote is specially designed for IPTV with a last-channel button and shortcut keys.

Processor: Nvidia Tegra X1+, 256-core GPU. RAM: 3 GB. Storage: 16 GB (expandable via USB/microSD). Resolution: 4K UHD, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos. OS: Android TV. Ethernet: Gigabit. Wifi: 802.11ac (dual-band). USB: 2x USB 3.0.
Who it’s for: The absolute top. The Nvidia Shield is the most powerful Android TV device on the market. The Tegra X1+ processor with its 256-core GPU decodes everything — 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HEVC, AV1. AI upscaling makes even 720p streams sharper. As a media player this is the best there is, full stop. Downside: it is the most expensive option and overkill for pure IPTV use. But if you also want emulation, a Plex server, or Nvidia GameStream, it is the only serious choice.

Based on the comparison above, these are my recommendations per profile:
For 90% of IPTV users this is the right device. 4K support, Wi-Fi 6, 2 GB RAM, and TiviMate runs excellently on it. You spend €45 and have a device that lasts for years. This is what I use myself and recommend to anyone who wants to try IPTV for the first time.
If IPTV is your main entertainment and you want the very best software experience (MyTVOnline 3), the Formuler is king. 4 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, gigabit ethernet, and a remote specially designed for IPTV. The €95 price difference compared with the Fire TV Stick is noticeable in speed and user experience.
If, besides IPTV, you also stream 4K films, run Plex, play games, or want an emulation setup, the Shield is the only option that can do it all. The Tegra X1+ processor is still the most powerful on the market for Android TV devices.
If you really want to spend as little as possible and 1080p HD is good enough, the Lite does what it needs to. Forget 4K, but for standard IPTV viewing on a screen that isn’t too large it is a fine choice.
Once you have your box, setting it up is a matter of minutes. Here I use a Fire TV Stick 4K as an example, with TiviMate as the IPTV app:
Plug the Fire TV Stick into a free HDMI port on your TV. Connect the USB power supply (use the supplied adapter, not a USB port on your TV — those often supply too little power). Turn on your TV and select the correct HDMI source.
Go through the setup wizard and connect the device to your wifi network. Preferably use the 5 GHz band for IPTV — it is faster and less susceptible to interference than 2.4 GHz. If your router is close enough to your TV, an ethernet adapter (€15) is even better.
Search for “TiviMate” in the Amazon App Store (on Fire TV) or the Google Play Store (on Android TV). Install the app. Alternatives: IPTV Smarters Pro, OTT Navigator, or Flix IPTV — all available in the app stores.
Open TiviMate, choose “Add playlist” and then “Xtream Codes”. Enter the three details you receive from Smootv via WhatsApp, Telegram or email: server URL, username and password. TiviMate now loads your complete channel list.
Once the channel list has loaded (the first time takes two to three minutes for 19,000+ channels) you can start watching straight away. Sort by category (Netherlands, Sport, Film) or use the search function to find a specific channel.
The best place for Fire TV Sticks — logically, since it is Amazon’s own product. Regular deals (Prime Day, Black Friday). Fast delivery, easy returns. Nvidia Shield and MAG boxes are also available.
The largest selection of all Dutch online shops. Fire TV Sticks, Xiaomi, Formuler, MAG — it’s all there. Pay attention to the sales partner: preferably buy from “Verkoop door bol” (sold by bol) or a bol.com Select partner for warranty and the right to return.
A more limited selection (mainly Fire TV Sticks and Nvidia Shield), but excellent customer service and fast delivery. The physical stores are handy if you want to hold the device before you buy.
Fire TV Sticks, Nvidia Shield and Chromecast available. Handy if you want to pick it up in store today. Prices are usually slightly higher than online, but you have it in your hands straight away.
Yes, if you have a Samsung or LG Smart TV from 2017 or newer. You can then install Smart IPTV, Flix IPTV or SET IPTV. You can also watch IPTV on your phone, tablet or laptop with apps such as IPTV Smarters or VLC. A separate box does, however, offer the best experience in terms of speed, picture quality and choice of apps.
That depends on your budget and how serious you are about IPTV. A Fire TV Stick 4K (€45) offers 90% of the experience for 30% of the price. A Formuler Z11 Pro (€140) offers a superior IPTV experience thanks to MyTVOnline 3, more RAM (4 GB vs 2 GB), and more storage (32 GB vs 8 GB). If IPTV is your main entertainment, the Formuler is worth the difference. If you only use it now and then, the Fire Stick is more than enough.
Not necessary, but recommended if you regularly experience buffering. Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 is fine for most people, provided your router isn’t too far away and there aren’t too many devices on the same network. An ethernet connection eliminates wifi interference completely. The Amazon Ethernet Adapter (€15) is a small price for much more stability.
Yes, on all Android TV and Fire TV devices you can use Netflix, Disney+, YouTube and IPTV side by side. The only exception is the MAG box, which only supports IPTV portals and cannot install other apps.
A good device lasts three to five years. My Fire TV Stick 4K from early 2024 still works flawlessly. The Nvidia Shield is known for lasting eight years or longer — Nvidia still provides updates for devices from 2017. Cheap no-name boxes often don’t last longer than one to two years due to a lack of software updates.
TiviMate is the best IPTV app for Android TV and Fire TV. The free version is already good; the premium version (€5/year) adds a recording function, multi-view, and more EPG options. IPTV Smarters Pro is the best alternative if you want a simpler interface. For Samsung and LG TVs (without a box), Smart IPTV is the standard choice.
A VPN is not required for IPTV, but some users prefer it for extra privacy. Bear in mind that a VPN reduces your speed (a 10-30% loss is normal), which can cause buffering on slower internet connections.
