It is the TV guide inside your IPTV app: it shows what is on now, what comes next and a short description of each programme. The guide is not part of the video stream. Your app downloads it separately as a data file from your provider and matches it to your channels. The EPG in an IPTV app is the same thing. Depending on the app you see it as a full grid, as a now and next line under the channel name, or as a progress bar while you watch.<\/p><ul class=\"sg-check\"><li>The title of the programme, with its start and end time<\/li><li>A short description, and for films often the year or the genre<\/li><li>What is on later today and in the coming days<\/li><\/ul><p>Films and series on demand do not use the EPG. They have their own posters and descriptions. The guide only concerns live channels.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"source\">Where the Guide Data Comes From<\/h2><p>Guide data travels in a format called XMLTV. It is a text file with two lists: the channels, each with an id, and the programmes, each with a channel id, a start time, an end time, a title and a description. Your provider keeps that file up to date and offers it at a web address, the guide address.<\/p><p>Your app then has to connect the two. Every channel in your playlist carries a guide id, and the app looks for the same id in the XMLTV file. When the ids match, the programmes appear under the channel. When a channel has no id, or the id is spelled differently in the two places, that channel stays without a guide while the others work.<\/p><div class=\"sg-note\"><p><strong>Good to know<\/strong><\/p><p>Guide data does not exist for every channel. Small, regional and temporary event channels often have none, with any provider. An empty line for a few channels is normal. An empty guide for all channels is a setup problem that you can fix.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"login\">Why the Login Method Matters<\/h2><p>With an Xtream Codes login, the app uses your server address, username and password for everything. It asks the same server for the guide, so you never have to enter a guide address. This is the easiest way to get a working EPG.<\/p><p>With an M3U link it depends on the app. An M3U list can carry the guide address in its first line, and some apps read it from there. Other apps ignore it and have a separate field for the guide address. If that field stays empty, the channels load and the guide does not.<\/p><p>With Smootv the guide is included in your subscription. To keep it filled, the app has to download a fresh copy regularly. Most apps do this by themselves, either when they start or on a fixed schedule, and most also have a button to refresh the guide by hand.<\/p><p>This explains a pattern many people notice: the guide works for a few days after setup and then runs empty. The app kept showing the old file and never fetched a new one. Switch on the automatic guide update if your app has that option, or refresh the guide by hand.<\/p><p>Where you find these options differs per app. Our setup guides show the screens. The app builds that list of past programmes from the EPG. Without guide data there is nothing to pick from, so a channel without a guide has no catch-up either.<\/p><p>The reverse is not true. A guide alone does not give a channel catch-up. The provider has to record the channel, and your app has to support the function. A large guide can take a few minutes on a TV.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"sg-fix\"><h3>Check the clock before anything else<\/h3><p>Guide times are stored with their time zone, and the app converts them to the time of your device. If the device thinks it is in another time zone, every programme shifts by the same number of hours. A wrong date can even make the whole guide look empty.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"sg-fix\"><h3>Still empty after that<\/h3><p>Message us the name of your app and whether you use an M3U link or Xtream Codes.
